Casino language can feel like a secret code. This glossary explains the words you are most likely to meet, in plain English and in groups so you can find them fast. It is not a complete dictionary, but it covers the terms that matter most when you are deciding whether and how to play. Definitions are general; always read the rules of the specific game or operator.
Money and odds
- Bankroll
- The total amount you have set aside for gambling. It should be money you can afford to lose.
- Stake (or bet)
- The amount you risk on a single spin, hand or wager.
- House edge
- The built-in mathematical advantage the casino has over players, shown as a percentage of money wagered over the long run.
- RTP (return to player)

- Variance or volatility
- How widely results swing. High volatility means rarer but larger wins; low volatility means smaller, more frequent ones.
- Hit frequency
- How often a game pays anything at all.
- Max win
- The largest payout a game can produce, usually stated as a multiple of your stake.
- Limit
- The minimum or maximum bet allowed at a table or game.
Slots
- Reel
- A vertical column of symbols that spins.
- Payline
- A line across the reels on which matching symbols must land to win.
- Ways to win
- A system in which matching symbols on adjacent reels pay regardless of line position.
- Wild
- A symbol that substitutes for others to complete a win.
- Scatter
- A symbol that usually pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands.
- Free spins
- Spins awarded inside a game or as a promotion, played without deducting from your balance.
- Bonus buy
- An option to pay a multiple of your stake to enter a bonus round directly.
- Autoplay
- A setting that spins repeatedly for you. Use loss and time limits if it is available.
- RNG (random number generator)
- The software that determines each result independently of previous ones.
Table games
- Blackjack
- A card game where you try to beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without going over.
- Roulette
- A wheel game where you bet on where a ball will land. European wheels have one zero; American wheels have two.
- Baccarat
- A card comparison game where you bet on the player hand, banker hand or a tie.
- Push
- A tie between you and the dealer, in which your stake is returned.
- Live dealer
- A game run by a real dealer and streamed in real time.
- Side bet
- An optional extra wager on a table game, often with a higher house edge than the main bet.
Accounts and promotions
- KYC (know your customer)
- Identity checks that licensed operators must carry out.
- Wagering requirement

- Deposit match
- A bonus that adds a percentage of your deposit.
- Cashback
- A promotion returning a share of losses, usually with conditions.
- Self-exclusion
- A tool that blocks you from gambling for a chosen period. It is a strong protection if you feel you are losing control.
- Deposit limit
- A cap you set on how much you can deposit in a period.
- Reality check
- A reminder that shows how long you have been playing.
- Licence
- Permission from a regulator to offer gambling to players in a given territory.
Terms you may see used loosely
Some words are used in ways that can mislead. “Hot” and “cold” describe streaks that have no effect on the next result. “Due” suggests a win is owed, but random results owe nothing. “Loose slots” is a marketing phrase with no fixed definition. When you meet a term you do not understand, look it up before you play.
Keep learning safely
When a term is unclear, look it up before you deposit, not after. Reputable operators publish rules for every game and promotion, and a short pause to read them costs nothing. If a casino makes its terms hard to find or hard to understand, treat that as useful information about the casino.
Why the jargon exists
Many casino terms come from the history of land-based gambling and simply carried over online. Others were created by marketing teams to make ordinary features sound exciting. Knowing the plain meaning helps you notice when a word is doing sales work instead of describing something concrete. For example, a “lucky spin” is still an ordinary random spin, and a “VIP” label is a customer category, not a change in the odds.
Three terms worth learning first
If you only remember three entries, make them house edge, volatility and wagering requirement. The first tells you the average cost of playing, the second tells you how bumpy the ride will be, and the third tells you how a bonus limits your ability to withdraw. Together they explain most of the surprises new players run into.
